Does black pepper really make turmeric 2,000% more absorbable?
That impressive absorption number you've seen everywhere comes from a single study older than most of the people quoting it, and it's worth examining rather than repeating.
The claim traces to Shoba and colleagues, 1998, in Planta Medica. It was one small single-dose human study, and its curcumin-only control group had serum levels below the limit of detection. When the comparison baseline can't be reliably measured, the headline multiplier rests on shaky math.
The modern counterpoint is sharper. A 2025 iScience pharmacokinetic reappraisal ran a crossover in 9 healthy males across three formulations. Piperine added no measurable benefit to plasma curcumin, even at high doses, and the best formulation still peaked roughly 100-fold below concentrations shown to have biological effects in vitro.
So why is piperine in the formula at all? The mechanism is plausible.
